What this site is, what it is not, how the guides get made, and what happens when we get something wrong.

This is field experience, not regulation

Everything here describes how we handle animals in far West Texas. It is not legal advice and it does not replace your state wildlife agency.

Tagging rules, transport rules, check station requirements and disease testing differ by state, by county and sometimes by season. Confirm current rules with the agency that issued your licence before you cut, move or ship anything. When our guidance and an agency rule disagree, the agency wins.

Nothing here is veterinary or public health advice. If an animal looked or behaved wrong before you took it, stop and call your state agency rather than reading a website.

How do we test?

On real animals, over full seasons, with the failures recorded.

Numbers on this site come from our own logs: capes measured at intake, salt weighed, hours recorded between the shot and the salt table. Sample sizes are small because three people can only handle so many animals in a season. Where a figure is a range rather than a number, that is why.

Steel and edge figures are field observations, not laboratory measurements. Hide, hair and grit vary between animals, and a blade that gives five hides on aoudad may give three on a muddy whitetail.

Money and links

No paid placements, no sponsored guides and no link sales.

We link to manufacturers, makers and agencies when it helps a reader check something for themselves. If an affiliate arrangement is ever added, it will be named on this page and marked on the page carrying it, before it goes live rather than after.

Nobody pays to appear in the comparison tables. A product that performed badly stays in the table with the result it earned.

What happens when we are wrong?

Corrections get published on the page, with the date and what changed.

We do not quietly edit a number and move on. If a figure changes because our own logs contradicted it, the page says so. Guides carry the name of whoever wrote them and whoever reviewed them, and both of those people answer for it. See the about page for how a piece gets through review.

Report an error to [email protected]. Corrections from readers are the cheapest quality control we have.
